[ it's the middle of the night when the messages comes through, with no rhyme or reason or any idea if istredd will be awake to read it. but yennefer has a lot on her mind, and when she's reached the point that all of the boys and river are passed out, curled up in bed, and yennefer... can't.
her mind has been spinning of late, about finding the mage for john. about knowing that it is only a matter of time before river and cassian, too, make their escape. about thancred, and stephen, who have settled into this small, rickety, bad excuse of a shack let alone a home, and yennefer, who-

River and Cassian are well enough- though I assume she's let you know. Her lessons have come a long way- suppose a lot of that is what she accomplished with you, while still in the castle.
I do need to ask- What's come of Oli and Willan? After the coup. Who's taken over alchemy?
[ Istredd is usually up at odd hours but he is slightly surprised to see the message from Yennefer. He wonders what's keeping her up; perhaps getting settled into Nott isn't as easy as they all hoped. He sets aside his book and focuses on her instead. ]
She has checked in, yes.
Oli and Willan are fine, they were tense for awhile considering everything, but they don't waste good mages here. Not unless they have to.
Alchemy is now taken over by Barnat.
[ She'd know the mage to be skilled but not to her level. A safe bet. ]
I would have told you if something went wrong with them, Yenna, I kept an eye on them.
[ of course she knows the mage, after certain events she did a lot more work to at least know the mages in thorne by name, if nothing else. but she also doesn't know the mage, not enough to know if the classes are actually being taught the correct way.
it is not lost on her, how she went from only taking up the class so that the eyes on her studies would not look too closely, to now feeling some ownership of it. feeling like another thing she'd become settled and comfortable doing has been pulled from her grasp.
she didn't even like most of her students, the tired, self-righteous mages of the college. but some she did, and maybe with the adrenaline and planning and work of getting john from istredd's hands through not and out again has her thinking more on the castle. ]

The castle has moved on to the best of its ability, but there is still a constant hanging tension considering what happened there. They killed quite a few people and loyalists before taking over and the survivors are grateful but still unsafe. He understands that sensation well. ]
You wouldn't want to be here, Yenna. Even if they had let you out of the dungeons quickly enough, it would feel like a noose is around your neck at all times.
[ And Istredd knows how much she hates feeling trapped. They've always been trapped in Thorne but with some confidence that their abilities are respected. Her position with the Queen made it feel like a power play that worked for her. ]
None of us have made a connection to the Sidwells yet. They're impossible to read.
