[ Istredd has been impressed and proud of his students lately, they've really dedicated themselves more than he expected. He is hardly the taskmaster that his own mentor was, but he's a bad person, and Istredd tries to be gentler and more patient. It seems that most people came out of the Pit looking for ways to control themselves, and for some that meant strengthening the pieces that had gone weak.
Mat is much better than he was right after, trailing ice everywhere he went, and he seems determined to find that power within himself. Istredd wouldn't say he's not meeting his potential, it's just an unraveling. The first step is to lack fear. Once that happens, it all gets easier. They were taught to always fear magic in the Brotherhood, but he'd rather not live in fear. And he doesn't want that for them either. ]
I think you might be ready to push a little harder, Mat. You've been making great strides lately, so it may be time to get past the comfort zone. What do you think?
[ Istredd is a teacher but he doesn't make demands. He is asking Mat's opinion because he understands that his hesitance of magic comes from very real fear, but he isn't going to manage to get past it if they stay in the same place. He won't push him though, it is Mat's decision. ]
