I don't disagree that it's worse if a third or fourth party is aware of its existence now, but if it is an object of great power, it would be like destroying the Singularity. Unwise and potentially disastrous.
But yes, it doesn't matter if we can't find it. Then it will truly be out of anyone's hands but the thief.
