It's been decades since he was Kell's age, a long time for him to find his path and to settle into himself, and to come to grips with the experiences he had as a youth.
He sees so much of himself in Kell. And that is why he worries for him. Istredd wonders what his life would be like if he did have a more positive figure in his life early on, how much it might have changed the influence Stregobor had on him. He wants to be that for Kell, what he didn't have.
